Phonics
At Zouch Academy we follow a scheme called - Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised. Information for parents can be found on their website here: https://www.littlewandlelettersandsounds.org.uk/resources/for-parents/
There is support on the website through the form of videos to show you how the sounds are pronounced. There is also a guide to how to teach the formation of each sound.
Phonic terminology glossary:
Phoneme- an individual sound within a word e.g. t-r-ai-n
Grapheme – how a sound is written
Digraph – two letters that make one sound e.g. ‘ai’
Split digraph- two letters that join together to make a single sound, but have other letters between them e.g. m- a- k- e
Trigraph – three letters that make one sound e.g. ‘igh’
Syllable – small groups of sounds that you hear in each word
Vowel- letters that are said with an open mouth – a, e, i, o, u
Consonant – letters that are not vowels and only use part of the mouth to pronounce

Year 1 Phonic Screening Check:
In June in Year 1, the children sit their Year 1 Phonic screening check. This check tests the children's application of their phonic knowledge, through segmenting and blending of phonemes. The test consists of a combination of real and pseudo (made up) words that the children will read. If the children do not meet the pass mark, they will re-sit the test the following year when they are in Year 2. Any children who are working well below the Year 1 reading curriculum will be exempt from the check in communication with the parents and Mrs Johnson.
Flashcards:
Collins have brought out Little Wandle Phonics flashcards that can be purchased to use at home, to support your child reading and learning the phonemes. These can be bought using the following link at £6.99 per pack:

Reading
At Zouch we love reading and we aim to encourage every child to develop this love! We believe that reading for enjoyment is an essential part of learning and something we want to stay with our children for life! Throughout the year we put on lots of special events to promote reading such as reading challenges, competitions, book fairs, bedtime stories and our Zouch Book Week in March.
The website and links below will give you more information about reading with your child, book recommendations and how to enjoy books together.

SPAG
Spelling, Punctuation, and Grammar provide the foundations for accurate and meaningful spoken and written communication. Please use this SPAG Progression for Parents which explains key terminology with examples relevant to all year groups throughout the school. At the end of the guide, you will also find a list of websites that we recommend for further support should you require it.
