MFL At Zouch

At Zouch Academy, we believe that learning a foreign language opens doors to new cultures, experiences and opportunities. Our Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity, develop confidence and foster a lifelong love of language learning.

We use the Language Angels programme to provide a broad, engaging and progressive curriculum that enables all pupils to develop their language skills and reach their full potential. Through exciting topics and meaningful contexts, children build the knowledge and confidence needed to communicate in another language while developing a deeper understanding of the wider world.

Whilst formal Modern Foreign Languages teaching begins in Key Stage 2, our Year 2 pupils are introduced to languages through our Language of the Term initiative. Each term, children are exposed to a different language from around the world through key vocabulary and simple phrases. This helps to spark curiosity about languages and cultures while providing a foundation for future language learning.

Our Intent:

At Zouch Academy, we aim to develop enthusiastic, confident and resilient language learners who appreciate the value of communication and cultural understanding.

We want every child to:

  • Develop confidence and enjoyment in learning a foreign language.
  • Communicate effectively through speaking, listening, reading and writing.
  • Understand how language works through the study of vocabulary and age-appropriate grammar.
  • Develop respect for different cultures, traditions and ways of life.
  • Build resilience and confidence when taking risks in their learning.
  • Be well prepared for further language study at secondary school and beyond.

Learning a language also supports children's wider development by strengthening memory, communication, problem-solving skills and cultural awareness.

Implementation:

Modern Foreign Languages are taught throughout Key Stage 2 using the Language Angels scheme of work. Lessons are carefully sequenced to ensure that children revisit and build upon previous learning, enabling them to make steady progress over time.

Through engaging and interactive lessons, pupils develop the four key language skills:

  • Listening
  • Speaking
  • Reading
  • Writing

Children learn new vocabulary and grammatical structures through a range of activities, including speaking and pronunciation practice, listening tasks, reading activities, writing opportunities, songs, games and cultural studies.

As they move through Key Stage 2, pupils develop an increasingly secure understanding of vocabulary, sentence structure and grammar. They learn how to communicate with growing confidence and independence while applying their knowledge in a variety of contexts.

Progression Through the School:

Children begin each academic year by revisiting and consolidating previously taught language skills. Learning then progresses from developing and securing early language skills, such as vocabulary, pronunciation and simple sentence building, to applying these skills in more complex spoken and written contexts as their confidence grows.

Here are the topics covered in each year group as children progress through Key Stage 2:

Year 3:

  • I Am Learning French
  • Animals
  • Instruments
  • I Am Able To...
  • Fruits
  • Ice Cream

Year 4:

  • Seasons
  • Vegetables
  • Presenting Myself
  • My Family
  • In the Classroom
  • At the Tea Room

Year 5:

  • Phonics and Pronunciation 1-3
  • The Date

  • Do You Have a Pet?

Year 6:

  • Phonics and Pronunciation 1-4
  • My Home
  • Habitats
  • School
  • At the Weekend

By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils can understand longer texts, participate in simple conversations and write increasingly detailed responses, providing a strong foundation for further language learning at secondary school.

Enrichment and Cultural Understanding:

At Zouch Academy, we believe language learning should extend beyond the classroom. Children are encouraged to explore the cultures, traditions and customs of countries where the language is spoken.

This may include:

  • Learning about festivals and celebrations.
  • Exploring traditional foods.
  • Studying music, geography and daily life in other countries.
  • Participating in language-themed activities and assemblies.
  • Exploring a variety of world languages through our Language of the Term programme.

These experiences help children develop a greater appreciation of diversity and encourage respect for people, cultures and communities around the world.

Impact:

The impact of our Modern Foreign Languages curriculum is measured through ongoing assessment of speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, alongside pupil voice and classroom outcomes.

By the time pupils leave Zouch Academy, they will:

  • Enjoy learning languages.
  • Communicate with confidence using an increasing range of vocabulary and grammar.
  • Demonstrate curiosity about the wider world.
  • Show respect and appreciation for different cultures.
  • Approach new learning with confidence and resilience.
  • Be fully prepared for the next stage of their language-learning journey.

Our curriculum equips children with the language skills, confidence and cultural awareness needed to thrive in an increasingly connected and diverse world.
